30 Days of Delight
Writing Through the Senses with Divine Ink
Imagine … “I am lying on a hammock, on the terrace of my room at the Hotel Mirador, the diary open on my knees, the sun shining on the diary … The sun, the leaves, the shade, the warmth, are so alive that they lull the senses, calm the imagination. This is perfection. It is eternal, it overwhelms you, it is complete.” ~ Anais Nin
Let’s start here, lying in the hammock, your journal open, a pen resting in the seam, when a prompt stirs you to pick up the pen and lazily begin to plume: “Lulling my senses …” where does your divine ink flow from here?
Writing through the senses is one of my favorite experiences, and has been the theme on several of my international retreats. It’s the way I create living, breathing snapshots. If you’re like me, you have a heart full of memories from your favorite places, and you may also have a wild imagination for places you’ve not yet experienced or been to physically. I believe our senses open portals to dimensions past, present, and future (stay with me on this!) … offering a kind of “time travel” and exploration.
I’m not going anywhere just yet, but I can “write my way there,” wherever “there” is.
That’s why I created “30 Days of Delight ~ Writing Through the Senses,” designed to arouse the senses, enliven our writing, inspire alive sensory descriptions; and to recall magical memories and open a portal to imagination.
Will you join me?
“Nothing can cure the soul but the senses, just as nothing can cure the senses but the soul.” ~ Oscar Wilde
“Dear Janet,
I just want to thank you so very much for the wonderful prompts that you send daily. Originally, I started out having them be a very small part of my usual morning writing but as of late I have changed my method entirely. Instead of writing a page of brain emptying, I use the prompt and write just a few short lines of prose poetry, beginning with your prompt. When I read them back to myself, I am shocked to hear my inner wisdom. They have truly made a difference in my mood and how I start my day. Just know how much difference you are making in my life on a daily basis.” ~ Deborah

“Smell is a potent wizard that transports you across thousands of miles and all the years you have lived. The odors of fruits waft me to my southern home, to my childhood frolics in the peach orchard. Other odors, instantaneous and fleeting, cause my heart to dilate joyously or contract with remembered grief. Even as I think of smells, my nose is full of scents that start awake sweet memories of summers gone and ripening fields far away.” ~ Hellen Keller

We’ll begin as we do with any journey, sparked by a “call …”
“Already my gaze is upon the hill, the sunlit one. The way to it, barely begun, lies ahead. So we are grasped by what we have not grasped, full of promise, shining in the distance. It changes us, even if we do not reach it, into something we barely sense, but are; a movement beckons, answering our movement . . . we just feel the wind against us.” ~ Rainer Maria Rilke
