Inspiration for “Moon Mother, Moon Daughter ~ Myths and Rituals that Celebrate a Girl’s Coming of Age”

How would it be different if we looked forward to our daughters’ first steps into womanhood with the same anticipation and excitement with which we had anticipated their first walking steps?

What if there was a whole community of women waiting to receive them into womanhood? What if there was a way for mothers and daughters to walk together?

These are the questions we began to ask ourselves the day that the idea for this book was conceived. We had been meeting every Monday at the beach to write, and this day was exceptional—crisp, clear, and sunny enough to warrant the umbrella we sat beneath at our favorite seaside restaurant.

Before we would buckle down to work on our own individual writing projects, we would always spend a few luxurious minutes catching up on each other’s personal lives and especially on those of our children, who were our strongest bond. We had known each other since they were babies and had cared for each other’s children like our own. We exchanged stories about our daughters and shared our observations and feelings about their changing bodies and attitudes as they approached adolescence. We talked about what we would like our daughters to know, both spiritually and practically, as they came of age. Most importantly, we wanted to find a way to stay connected to our daughters. That led us to the library and the bookstores. At a time when there seemed to be a plethora of books and information on puberty, periods, girl power, and parenting, we discovered that something vital was missing: a spiritually focused, coming-of-age book for mothers and daughters to use together.

Through this search we discovered a divine feminine moon-oriented goddess culture based in ancient wisdom and matriarchal values that offered us a new perspective about women, which became the basis for the book.

Moon Mother, Moon Daughter is the product of our quest for a new way to guide and stay connected to our daughters.
