Shapeshifter

 SHAPESHIFTER  by Janet Lucy

"Cloaked in black, she steps out at twilight. Veiled by thick nocturnal mist. Dark stockings and sturdy boots protrude from beneath the ragged hem. Unnoticed, her power under wraps, until the first gust of wind ruffles her luminous black feathers. She fills her lungs with the night’s cold breath. Feels a surge. Stifles the urge to caw until the costume change is complete, trading her boots for claws, her wool for wings. She is not of this world. Descended from the stars. Once a month she takes flight. Silhouette against the moon. Heralding another cycle of life, death, rebirth." ~ Janet Lucy.

I was honored to have my prose poem, "Shapeshifter," included in the book, Crow Moon, by Lucy H. Pearce (Womancraft Publishing, 2024).

These were some ideas about "crow symbolism" I was inspired by as I conjured the vision for "Shapeshifter."

Archetypal trickster. Shamanic shapeshifter. Night bird to medicine woman. Keeper of the Sacred Laws. Bringer of messages from the spirit world. Knower of the unknowable. Life’s mysteries. An omen. Foretells transformation or change. Dwells in the realm of non-linear time and multi-dimensional space. Travels the range of past, present and future. Keen sighted. Sees beyond illusions. Transcendent vision. Listen. When the crow caws. Transmission of spiritual wisdom. Divine secrets.
